When I first got my Health Warrior chia bars, this was the song that rang out in my head. I just can’t hear the word chia without singing it!
These days, chia seeds have become a healthy food for various reasons – packed with fiber, good protein, filled with omega-3 fatty acids. I’m constantly looking for snack bars that I will like, my kids will like, and that are both healthy for you and low in sugar.
I also carry real food in the form of bars when I run anywhere over 8 miles. I can handle two gels on a run; after that, I need something solid going down. I had been using a different brand, which I liked but that had a bit more sugar than I wanted. So when these showed up, I was excited to give them a try.
First thing I loved: they are so slim! Since I carry the bars in my upper back vest pocket, along with my pepper spray, I need something that is easy to pack. At 100 calories a piece, I decided for my longest runs of this training season, 20 miles up to this point, I would carry three. That would give me a 300 extra caloric bonus. I only ate two on each 20 miler, but they were slim enough it didn’t take up room.
So How Do They Taste?
Um . . . YUMMY! I opened both boxes. As a peanut butter fan, I knew the chocolate peanut butter would be a huge hit of mine, but funnily enough I think I liked the Vanilla Almond more! The bars have a very rich flavor. Consistency wise, they are not crumbly at all. I could take a bite on the run without the bar breaking into a million pieces, leaving me food-less. Plus they are more moist than any bar I’ve eaten, which I loved.
The chia seeds themselves were a surprise after that first bar. They do have a tendency to get stuck between the teeth – even the coloring book has a picture of this! (Oh, did I mention I got a BONUS coloring book – all about marathon running – with my bars!)
The first time I ate the bars the chia seeds surprised me. When my daughters ate them, they commented on the seeds in their teeth as well. This ended up being a fun joke and not a problem – we would eat, laugh, and show each other our teeth. Then we’d use our tongues to get out the few seeds that had gotten stuck!
My daughters LOVE the bars. They ate the majority of them; in fact, I’m one short for my race on Sunday!
I taste tested two flavors and liked them both. Next up I want to try the caramel sea salt, as that is one of my favorite blends of flavors ever. The Health Warrior chia bars also come in coconut, apple cinnamon and banana nut (along with other flavors). Along with these bars, Health Warrior has a variety of other superfood snacks, including protein and pumpkin seed bars. Check out their website to get an idea of what they offer.
Overall, I love these bars. The flavor, consistency, ease of carrying, and the fact that my kids love them! I know some people will care that they are just 100 calories. Myself, sometimes I eat two at a time! (Don’t judge!) We already have our next order ready – which I didn’t put in on time, sadly, since I didn’t realize the girls had gobbled up a few extra I’d hidden away for Sunday’s marathon! (That’s okay. I’ll be fine!)
