Seven years ago our household adopted a beautiful, crazy, skinny, pound pup named Otis. We’d been considering a dog for a while, but with two young kids running around we weren’t sure how it would all work. It was crazy in the beginning, but even in the midst of the craziness (I’m talking chewed up furniture, energy for days, anxiety for years) we fell in love.
Otis is an active dog. He loves car rides, time at the beach, swimming in the pool, going for walks and runs and anything that involves active time with the family.
When we first got him, he ran with me most days. Now that he’s a little older, he tires out more easily, but he can still play ball outside with the best of them; and sometimes on my early AM runs I circle back home to take him for a mile or two. Nightly, after dinner, we take him on family walks.
And he love ball. A lot of ball. He can play ball for hours.
I’ve tried many collars on him. However, the ones I have always used were made of fabric material, and because he swims and runs and plays ball – not to mention his love for rolling in dirt and grass and mud – the collars always ended up smelling.
When I saw the Stunt Puppy offer – to test and review a Go Dog Glo(TM) Dry Collar (TM) – I was excited; the collar, made with Biothane (R) waterproof material, makes this collar stink proof. Stink proof! My thought: If that held true, it meant I would not need to continually replace collars once they met maximum stinkage for our house. Which is often. And expensive.
As you can see, Otis loved his collar on first sight. He goes crazy when its time to take a walk. It took me a moment to get the collar adjusted to fit his neck, but after I did figure out the correct size I didn’t have to do it again – nor have I since, in over a month. The collar stays where you size it to.
The collar has two D rings; one for the dog tags and one for the ring on which the leash is attached. This way you don’t have to fool with spinning the collar around to get the leash attached, which is great when your dog is as fiesty as mine pre-walk! Plus, the ring doesn’t share both the tags and the leash, which I really liked.
We headed out for our first walk and all went well. The collar stayed in place and I felt the buckles, built to hold up to 200 pounds of pull, handled his enthusiasm quite well! I never felt as though he may slip out of the collar or tug open the buckles, which has happened when I’ve used previous collars.
I tested the collar in the evening hours also. The collars are trimmed with 3M(TM) Scotchlite (TM) reflective material, which means it doesn’t glow in the dark but when a light hits it – for instance, a car’s headlights – the material reflects back up to 500 feet. Since I do run with Otis at times in the morning, and since I’m a street runner, it made me feel comfortable to note that a car coming from that far away would still be able to see him.
And of course he swam, swam and swam some more in his new collar! I loved the fact that it was waterproof, which meant quick drying, and still NO SMELL!
My opinion! This collar is a HIT! I would absolutely purchase it again (though I don’t think I’ll need to because it’s so hardy!), and I have recommended it over and over to friends with active dogs. I am going to purchase the runner’s leash next, which is a no-hands leash I can use to run with Otis. Same benefits of the collar!
