I knew as soon as the opportunity to review Brilliant Reflective posted that I wanted in.
I have a severe lack of reflective gear considering the amount of running I do in the early AM hours (95% +). In fact, and as I talked about in a former post, someone yelled that they couldn’t see me while I was running in the early morning hours not too long ago, which prompted me to look up reflective or lighted gear.
I know I don’t like running with a headlamp, because I’ve tried, and I don’t want anything on my knuckles or hands. I wanted something to put on myself, though it can’t be a vest or shirt since I already wear a hydration vest on every single run.
Who me, picky?!
Then these came along!
I’ll tell you up front I was skeptical when I opened the package of the stick ons. I didn’t know if they would last through multiple runs, especially in south Florida where it is hot and humid much of the year; but I don’t want to try to iron anything onto my hydration vest for fear of burning a gaping hole in the fabric with the iron! So, I stuck on multiple strips and out the door I went . . .
and they stuck!
As you can see in the above picture, the strips made a huge difference! The strips, made out of 3M (TM) Scotchlite Reflective material, are retroreflective; this means carlights (or your phone’s flash, or any light source) bounces off of the reflective strips and returns to the light source. You don’t see the strips when they are on until a light source hits them; then they become reflective and you will be seen.
Brilliant Reflective created these strips as a means for people outside to be seen by automobiles. You can place the strips on the areas you move – for instance, your arms and legs while running – and when the driver sees you and the motion you are making, the driver is more likely to recognize you as a human. Pretty cool, huh?!
I’m happy to say that at this point I’ve done about five runs with the same replaceable stickers on my vest and only one has fallen off! That one I’d placed on the front of my pack for cars coming in my direction, and the material there is mesh, not solid. The stickers on the back of the pack that I placed along solid fabric still remain. Plus, the pack has enough stickers that those that fall off can be easily replaced.
After testing out the stick-ons, I tested out the iron-ons. It’s a super easy process to iron on the strips: place them where you want them, put a paper towel over them, iron. Viola! Total process took me under five minutes.
Place the strips.
Place paper towel over strips and iron.
I decided to place multiple on my shirt and one on the front of a pair of my shorts. I did just one set of running clothes at first. I was concerned I might feel them rub as I ran. I’m so happy to say I didn’t feel them at all, and, in fact, would forget I had them on until a car came my way. After two washes the strips are all still in place! I simply washed my clothes inside out, but they went through both the washer and the dryer. Again, the packs have multiple strips of several sizes, so they can be replaced if they come off. For under $15, that’s not bad at all.
Bottom line, these strips are amazing and they work! You can also use them on your kids’ clothes, backpacks, helmets, or any other material they may have on while out in the dark. Since our kids stand out for the bus in the dark when the time changes, I will place strips on their backpacks so they can be seen by cars.
